Hemp Seed Oil, Hemp Oil and CBD Oil: What’s the Difference, and Are They Safe?

January 23, 2020 By Our Own CEO, Stefani Thionnet

As the CBD industry takes shape and gains popularity, it’s important to be able to distinguish the difference between hemp seed oil, hemp oil, and CBD oil. One thing that is very important to remember is that hemp oil and CBD oil are the same things. There are certain platforms, such as Amazon, that do not permit the use of CBD at all, so for this purpose, some CBD manufacturers use the terminology hemp oil.

How often are your Clients confused by seeing one manufacturer offering hemp oil and another offering CBD oil? Because of the restrictions of some online platforms, it’s no wonder consumers are confused. Many online platforms also restrict advertising, so again, it can be confusing for consumers to see one product advertised as hemp oil and another offering CBD oil. The number of companies entering the CBD industry increases almost daily. It is difficult for consumers to know what a high-quality product is and what an inferior product is.

I’m going to help you understand how to explain these oils to your Clients to ensure that their confusion is ended.

What’s the Difference between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil

What’s the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil? Nothing. The hemp plant contains CBD, as does the cannabis plant. Both of these plants belong to the Cannabaceae plant family.

There are several different ways in which these oils are listed by manufacturers. Some will say hemp oil, others will say CBD oil, and there are those that say hemp CBD oil. A handful of manufacturers will go a step further and list their products as hemp-derived CBD oil.

Both hemp oil and CBD oil contain cannabidiol. Some will also contain THC at 0.3% or less. These are the full spectrum and broad spectrum derived from full spectrum oil products. Isolate products will not contain any THC, regardless if it’s listed as hemp oil or CBD oil.

What is Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp seed oil is a completely different product. To obtain hemp seed oil, the hemp seeds undergo a cold-pressing process – the same process that is used to obtain olive oil. There are no cannabinoids in hemp seeds. This is often confusing for consumers, so it is ideal for passing this information along to them. Hemp seed oil is used merely for its nutritional value.

Hemp seed oil is often used as a carrier oil in hemp CBD tinctures. This oil does have a highly nutritional profile as hemp seeds are a good source of healthy fatty acids (Omega-3 and Omega-6). Hemp seed oil contains essential fatty acids that the human body cannot produce itself. The oil contains a 3:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids – which is considered to be a perfect balance.

It is also a good source of antioxidants, minerals, phytosterols, and phospholipids.

Some of the minerals in hemp seed oil include:

  • Calcium
  • Zinc
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Iron
  • Sulfur
  • Phosphorus

If your Clients ask about finding quality hemp seed oil, there are a few pieces of guidance that can be passed onto them. A quality hemp seed oil will be in a dark colored bottle. Since the oil is sensitive to light, a dark bottle helps protect the oil. This is also why olive oil is often found in dark colored bottles.

The flavor of hemp seed oil is slightly nutty. Its ideal uses are in tinctures, finishing oils and taken by itself.

Is CBD Oil the Same as Cannabis Oil?

CBD oil and cannabis oil are not the same. Cannabis oil is derived from strains of cannabis plants and contains higher concentrations of THC. CBD oil, especially when extracted from hemp plants, is required to have 0.3% THC or less. If CBD oil is derived from cannabis plants, it’s often found as an isolate or broad-spectrum product.

Additional filtration and refining processes must be used to remove most or all of the THC of the oil if the CBD is derived from cannabis plants. Most CBD products, however, are derived from hemp since the concentration of cannabidiol is much higher. It is also a much easier process to create hemp oil/CBD oil products from hemp products since fewer processes are required to filter out impurities and, much of the time, the cannabinoid profiles are left intact (at least in the case of full spectrum and some broad spectrum applications).

Cannabis oil is intoxicating. CBD oil is not. Both are psychoactive, but the effects of CBD oil do not hinder one’s ability to function, think clearly or react. Psychoactivity is defined as “affecting the mind.” CBD does affect the mind, but not in an intoxicating way – it supports healthier responses to endocannabinoid system malfunctions and symptom fluctuations.
